Living and Loving Life with Lymphatic Malformation/Cystic Hygroma - A Guest Blog

Living and Loving Life with Lymphatic Malformation/Cystic Hygroma

I was so excited to be leaving the hospital to show off my beautiful baby boy. My bag was packed, the other half was on his way with the car seat and my parents were getting ready to bring my daughter to meet her new baby brother. I proudly watched as the paediatrician carried out their final checks to allow us to be discharged, when I heard the words which still make me feel sick to my stomach: “I need to get a senior colleague to come up. I think something is wrong. Did you have scans and were they normal?”

The paediatrician had noticed a swelling on his right cheek. I told her not to be silly – it was just swelling from the labour and birth – that was about the time when my previously laid-back approach to parenting adjusted itself slightly! After several paediatricians, Samuel was diagnosed with lymphatic malformation (LM) – a condition whereby the lymphatic drainage system does not form correctly, leading to cysts (also referred to as cystic hygromas). Samuel was whisked away for blood tests to check for chromosomal abnormalities (which came back clear) and then for a scan to check the size and location of his cysts.

When we got home, I felt as if my world had come crashing down. Samuel was unable to feed as his cyst extended into his mouth, and I was still waiting the results of the dreaded chromosome screen. We were taken into the amazing Birmingham Children’s Hospital, so Samuel could be tube-fed, an MRI could be performed and Samuel’s oxygen levels could be monitored over a period of 10 days. A treatment plan was drawn up and we became very familiar with Samuel’s consultant, Michael Kuo, who has now achieved God-like status in our family! We were released, with a clear chromosome screen, some special teats for Sam to feed, a treatment plan and a feeling of confidence that the future did, in fact look bright after all.

The following months were amazing. Samuel started sleeping through 12 hours at 8 weeks (yay!!!), met all his developmental milestones early and quickly melted the hearts of all who met him. He is full of giggles and is a typical boy – loves rough and tumble, always filthy and has the cheekiest, most adorable grin I have ever seen (although I may be a teeny bit biased!). Life has continued as normal and the LM has, on the whole, had very little impact on our everyday lives.

Samuel has recently started a course of sclerotherapy treatment, so our hospital visits have become more regular. However, we know that this is short-lived and hopefully, the sclerotherapy will do its job. If not, there are other options. Samuel may always have a slight swelling on his face, but this will not be anywhere near its current size (it is currently swollen due to the effects of the sclerotherapy). Samuel being Samuel will no doubt meet his challenges head on and bulldoze through them, as he does everything else!

The most tragic thing about my story is that LM is often diagnosed during ultrasound scans in pregnancy and, when this happened, women are advised to consider termination. The message given to these women is that the babies are unlikely to survive the pregnancy or are likely to have all kinds of accompanying conditions or disorders. I have made contact with many many families worldwide where this is not the case at all. There are huge numbers of people who have treatment for LM early on in life and it never reoccurs. The condition is rare, so medical professionals in local hospitals have very little knowledge and paint the bleakest picture. The specialists at the childrens’ hospitals tell a very different story. I am all for women being given a choice, however an informed choice can only be made with the correct information. Would someone terminate if they were to know that their child would need glasses or have a small birthmark on their cheek? The thought that I could have ever been asked to consider termination when I have such a perfect little boy terrifies me.

I am aiming to raise awareness of this condition, to ensure that women are given the full and
correct information when it is diagnosed in utero. Even if one person reading this remembers it and passes on the information to someone having to make a heartbreaking decision, that is an immense achievement. In the meantime, Samuel will continue his sclerotherapy treatment, alongside causing havoc at home! IF he can raise awareness of LM, I’m sure he will not be too bothered as he is far more interested in eating us out of house and home and terrorising his sister!

Thank you so much for reading x

Best bargain buys for Mummies-to-be!

My favourite (and most useful!) products for pregnancy!

My son at 21 Weeks, 5 Days

36 Weeks Bump!

After starting my Maternity Leave at 34 weeks, I found myself at home alone a lot of the time as my partner travels around Europe in his field-based job. I knew it was an ideal time to "Rest & Relax" (CONSTANT advice from my Midwife!) but I just couldn't resist the urges!

I was filling my days with endless housework, washing EVERYTHING (baby bedding, towels, my clothes, my partner's clothes etc.) in Non-Bio powder, go for long walks & swims to ensure I didn't gain too much 'Baby Weight' and just generally keeping myself busy.

This made it really difficult to relax in the evenings, but the products I am about to share with you really helped me to unwind... ON A BUDGET (as we all know SMP doesn't stretch that far!) Enjoy...

1. LUSH 'Dreamtime' Luxury Bath Melt (@lushcosmetics)

£3.25 each, available at www.lush.co.uk or in-store

Probably the most premium product on my list, but definitely worth it, even if you only try it once (I actually asked my partner for this and used the excuse "I've not made you buy me any wine for 7 months!")

The bath melt is Cocoa Butter based, so is really kind to all skin types and fantastic for stretch marks. It contains Lavender Oil and Chamomile Oil both known for their relaxing & soothing properties, and the real dried Jasmine flowers make your bath smell divine!

I guarantee after a long day carrying your bump, this will help you to unwind and get a good(ish!) nights sleep with your ever-growing tummy!

2. Dunelm Fogarty V-Shaped Pillow (@dunelmuk)

 £9.99 available at www.dunelm-mill.com and in-store
(Matching pillow case £2.99 comes in 16 colours)

After seeing so many expensive 'Maternity Pillows' (all around the £40 mark!) I stumbled across this, dare I say, MIRACLE, whilst shopping for Curtain tie-backs!

It is so much more affordable than pillows specifically designed for pregnant women and comes in handy for long after your baby is born too!

I used this pillow to support my bump in late pregnancy, took it to hospital to support me during labour, used it as a breast feeding pillow and now use it for a place for my son to nap during the day! I call this product "The BEST £10 I ever spent!" and urge all mummies-to-be to jump on the bandwagon!

3. Ovaltine Chocolate

Best Price £2 for 300g, ASDA

This night-time drink was a saviour during pregnancy! Low-calorie, packed with vitamins including Iron and Folic Acid and who doesn't love chocolate!?

Perfect after a long soak and right before bed!

4. Palmers Stretch Mark Butter (@palmersUK)

Best price £2.94, Tesco

Although Midwives say that creams do NOT reduce the appearance or occurrence of stretch marks I am totally convinced that this cream has helped, significantly.

I knew I was in for bad stretch marks as my mother has them - and it is hereditary! My stretch marks began to show around 24 weeks and got progressively worse throughout my pregnancy. However using this product has already reduced their appearance.

I started using it at around 20 weeks (just as I started showing!) and am still using it now. I am a total convert and have bought lots of other Palmers products since!

Baby Event 2013 Top 5 Products!

My Top 5 Products featured
 at the

5. Playtoes (@playtoes)

Playtoes are a brand new company who launched their product at the Manchester Baby & Toddler show. Playtoes are a range of pram shoes designed to stimulate baby's senses with features including a variety of textures, rattles & bright colours.

I loved this product and thought it was a fantastic idea! The designs are really cute and they would make a fantastic gift! My son would love playing with the different fabrics and hearing his little feet rattle.

4. Milkysnugz (@MilkySnugz)

My friend who I was visiting the Event with is an absolute sucker for anything cute so as soon as she saw the stand she literally ran to it, with myself jogging along behind!

Milkysnugz are cute and cuddly characters (coming in 6 different designs!) that slide over the top of your baby's bottle. Not only are they snuggly, but they have been proven to help with the transition from breast-feeding to bottle-feeding your baby.

Milkysnugz would have probably been my 2nd favourite product at the event until I grabbed a bottle from my changing bag to test it out and the (lovely) lady said "They don't fit Tommee Tippee bottles."

My friend and I were both heartbroken as we both use this brand, as do most of my friends! They do fit almost ANY other bottle brand though I am assured. Milkysnugz if you are reading this... PLEASE design a product to fit Tommee Tippee bottles as I LOVE your product!

3. Gemzdesignz (@gemzdesignz)

Gemzdesignz is a brand creating bespoke custom-made pram accessories and changing bags.

I LOVE this brand and you can really see the quality in all their products. The lady who designed and made all the products was on the stand and she was just as lovely as her products too.

2. MAM Night Orthodontic Soothers (@MAMBABYUK)

Another genius product from one of my favourite brands, MAM. Available in 0+ Months and 6+ Months these soothers are fantastic!

Having bought some I can honestly recommend these and say that rooting around your baby's cot in the dark with become a thing of the past. I have seen these 'glow in the dark' soothers sold by a few retailers (including one supermarket!) however have never come across any so cute! They come in lots of designs  (boys, girls & neutral) and would make a fantastic gift!

My favourite feature of the product is the sterilising box, which I haven't seen from any other brand. 25ml of water in the bottom of the box and a couple of minutes in the microwave and your soothers are ready to go. It also comes in handy for  keeping soothers together in your changing bag. A 5 star product in my opinion!

1. Driblet (@dribletbibs)

Stylish, functional and affordable, Driblet were DEFINITELY my favourite product! High quality dribble bibs that come in a range of stunning fabrics (even Christmassy designs!) and really do the job!

I bought this bib for my son...

...And we BOTH love it!

They are the perfect fit and will fit him for a long time to come as there are 4 different size settings. They wash really well (as promised!) and are SUPER value at £6 each or 2 for £10! I'll definitely be buying them as gifts for ALL my son's friends!
